Hill Climb Racing is a fun mobile game that rewards you for mastering its physics model.

If you’re in search of a fun game that you can play in short bursts as well as over longer periods, Hill Climb Racing is a great choice. The object of the game is to navigate a car across a 2D environment until you reach the finish line. What makes it challenging are the elevation changes, which you’ll struggle to climb at times, will cause you to gain too much speed and may serve as an obstacle as you’re airborne.

What makes Hill Climb Racing fun and even addictive is the consistency of the physics model. It is not realistic and can be punishing, but your times and fuel usage will improve as you master it. The big issues you’ll have to contend with as you race toward the finish line is not running out of fuel and not flipping the car over and breaking your neck in the process.

The game provides a number of carrots. Completing a level will give you access to the next one. Each level is unique aesthetically but also in terms of physics — there’s a moon level, for instance. You’ll also earn coins each time you play. The better you finish, the more coins you’ll earn. Use coins to purchase new cars as well as car upgrades. Some cars are faster, but there’s more to it than that. Some cars are better suited to a level than others. Once you’ve unlocked all levels, cars and upgrades, you can focus on setting the best times on each leaderboard.

Hill Climb Racing uses a 2D cartoony style, which does hide its older graphics to a degree. Nevertheless, this is an older game now. An upside to being older is that it runs well on almost any device, but a downside is that it looks its age and is really due for a refresh.
